I know a family that are big, warm and expansive; they have sofas so hidden with multicoloured cusions and throws in a variety of 'ethnic' prints and fabrics that you cannot tell with colour they truly are. They also have one of those big bowl-like chairs that envelop you in padding when you get in and are very difficult to escape. Sofas in holiday homes and hotels all seem to be very similar to me - unmemorable, all right to look at but fairly uncomfortable, no love expended on them and nothing recieved in turn.

I know another family that have big, black, leather sofas. The people in this family are very pretty, and in fact can be very nice people, but you have to tread lightly. Danger lurks in pissing them off (which is far too easy to do) and uncomfortable silences prey upon the unwary. I have slept on these sofas and found them to be deceptive - comfortable when you first sit down but as the night wears on they become sticky and hard and bumpy and harder and harder to cope with. Similar things can be said of their owners. (NOT that I am implying that all leather-sofa owners are like this - these particular leather sofas are just the meanest (bitchiest?) I've come across.)

Sofa shoppers, be warned! Clearly there is danger lurking in Kingdom of Leather - how will people read your sofatic choices? Will you be judged on the colour of your throw?

In fact, my curent level of neurosis does somewhat induce me to worry about such things - we have three sofas (soon to be two as the new house is very, very much smaller than this one). Do people observe the large hole in the covers of the big blue one and wonder how we can live with such damage? Do they wonder what further fissures lurk beneath the rather manky blanket covering one of the cusions of the pink one and think us deceptive? Do they tut at the superfluous nature of the the third sofa, hanging with the seatle at the unused end of the lounge and consider us wasteful? Do we have too many cusions, or too few? Is the coffee table too big? Is there just a little too much Rodin?

Ok, so maybe our sofas are not my biggest issue. Especially as I am not even a proper adult of this house (legally doesn't reall count in families), thus I don't really feel that the sofas are a direct reflection upon myself - which is lucky because I seem to think a lot of other things are. Maybe I'm right that my clothing and hair styles do affect what other people think of me, but I do wish that I would stop obsessing over it as though it determined what I am like instead of just advertising it.

Still, I think I am right when it comes to sofas - the more I think about it, the more sofas seem to suggest qualities about their owners. Grandoise settees in one house are kept immaculate while the rest of the (giant) house falls into bohemian ruin. My grandparent's sofa is a practical sofabed that reminds one that their current house is much larger than the four rooms (not bedrooms, actual rooms) they shared with their five children forty/twenty years ago. Sofas are important because of their place in the life of any family - gathering place and resting place. Maybe I'm being a little too romantic here (tis a nasty habit). And I'm not sure why I'm writing about furniture - but I supose four hours in Ikea will do that to you. :D

Plots and Plans

I would like to start a thing, not really an everyday thing, but a 'regular' thing, you know, whereby I discuss some aspect of myself, the world, television or something etc. I know that no-one reads this blog, so it'll really just be an excercise in writing - people keep saying that you should write what you know (this concept is what's earned my As in both my AS and A2 English coursework :D). And I suppose one day I hope I'll come back to it when I'm older to help me write that sitcom about my teenage experiences that I'm always dreaming of.

But right now, I'd just like to give it a try. The criteria will be thus: the post will be about a specific topic, ie 'moving house', 'really wanting children right now', 'how I love ikea' etc and I have to stick to that topic without meandering from the subject, which I tend to do. (I recently tried to write something specifically about my feelings regarding the film 'Leon' and ended up rambling for two pages about how depressed I was, which was beside the point) This will be useful in honing my writing skillz and plus'll help me to air a few of those things that seem to get caught up in my head sometimes. Woo!

It needs a name... TRT? (The Regular Thing?) TAM? (Things About Me?) The Thing? Read me? I like 'Read Me' actually... Or maybe 'Me Mouthing Off a Lot', or 'Big Gob Monkey'. From the Forest Floor? Random Things About Me (RTAM) - OOH! - This makes me think of 'R. Tam' which makes me think of River! 'The River'? I Like it, actually. 'The River' - 'TR'? It's good, actually. Understanding and Comprehension. It's fabulous! Should I make a new blog for this or something? Hmm... I think I'll start it here and if it takes off or something I'll give it its own room (like a newborn baby growing into a toddler lol!).

Otherwise, watch this space :)

So I managed to find that poem my sister wrote that inspired the name of this blog.

She was six:

My family is wonderufl and
my family is beautiful and
Baby animals are sweet.

Exams are done! It just makes everything so good :D

Bodies - political commentary as hidden by stick figures - means a lot more than it looks... :P

Koalafish - the inevitable hybrid.

Masks - 'random emo image' sums it up nicely :)

In other news: I have incorporated a new art posts list in the bar thingy in lieu of working out how to do tags - one day, one day! til my major exams... - I love Leon and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Foxfire and yay - my cat is ill and there are probably fleas in my bed which would explain the reoccuring bites all over me - we're moving to Caterham on the eighteenth of july - we're having a fabulous leaving party on the fifteenth of july - I need more HATS.

Which Major Romantic Poet Would You Be (if You Were a Major Romantic Poet)?

You are William Wordsworth! Somehow Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit has become spliced with Ray on Yahoo Movies! Oh the hilarity!

I didn't even realise until I was reading the moviemom's review and it claimed that Wallace and Gromit depicted 'Sexual references and situations, including adultery' and 'Drug abuse, including heroin, drinking, a lot of smoking' - which threw me a little.

I feel I shall now be haunted with mental images of Wallace the Junkie and his aldulterous, shag-aholic, poster-child-for-lung-cancer dog.

I'm still alive!

(which is a miracle due to the compination of exams + no sleep + driving practice)

Not an angsty post! Or not. Which is a double negative so I'll just go strangle myself. NO! I said no angst!

Well I am still pretty shitted up about that website, but I can't just shut my eyes and ears and hum to myself in the hope that I'll feel better if I distance myself from it. I tried that when I was twelve and succeeded so completely that it wasn't until I was sixteen and au-pairing in the US that I remembered all that confusion and worked out what it meant. But that whole episode is another story.

Wait! I really didn't want to make this another angsty post because I'm feeling like I'm being very self-centred (which is stupid, why else have a blog if not to endlessly obsess over your own motives and thoughts and actions and self and all those grubby little episodes that make up our lives). I would really like to post some art but I'm just... lazy. There's no excuse but that for some reason dragging my (seemingly-unable to lose weight) arse downstairs to access the scanner because it's so ridiculously far away- STOP! I'm writing angsty again. GAH. I'm not depressed, I hope I'm not depressed because I really can't deal with that right now. No, I'm hormal. Yes, that's it. Phew.

So I'll do what normally adjusted people (-that's the last time, I promise) and post links! I'm quite excited.

Fic Recs:
Nearly all from Silverlake because I've been reading my way through that:

Scrubs: My Spiders from Mars by cgb - JD/Dr Cox and just... perfect, ahh.

Doctor Who and Firefly: Anything by Tara LJC O'Shea. I'm just in love with her writing.

Battlestar Galactica: for whom it is reserved by Sangga - I just love things like this; character sketches are my secret lovers.

Bring it on: Routine by Pearl-o - perfectly picks up on something I think more than a few people suspect.

>>Finally, because I just discovered her, anything by Kate Bolin, but particularly:

Doctor Who: 18 Seconds - I just like how the character of the Doctor is sketched out in this series of events and visits - and how this random sight-seeing seems to be so directionless compared to the events of the series itself. Plus, it's lovely.

Harry Potter: Come Shots - A bunch of Hermione/Girls which is pretty... nice. Heh.

X-men: La Brea and Gaiety - two short stories about Rogue, both wonderful and sweet (one is also funny :D).

Firefly: Milk Run - I have a strange tendancy to be afraid of Firefly fanfiction, probably because of my huge insecurities about someone mangling something I am so emotionally invested in. Milk Run is lovely, though - and pitch perfect in tone and character.

Maybe I'll write some of my own soon. In the mean time, rejoice! While there are people who write like this in the world, life can't be all bad, can it? :D

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://wonderufl.blogspot.com/2006/06/not-angsty-post-or-not-which-is-double.html' title='Not an angsty post! I suppose I could tell myself it is an attempt to understand the 'enemy', or to add fuel to the fire of my anger against people like that, and organisations like that. But really I'm just left feeling heart-weary and sick to the marrow with wondering how a person can call themselves Christian and yet seek to misuse "God's word"* in this horrific way.

I want to able to laugh at it. The only thing I could find funny and non-threatening was the overwhelmingly petty response to the Swedish royal family here: "The King looks like an anal-copulator, & his grinning kids look slutty & gay!" Statements like that allow me to assume this is only a twelve-year-old boy acting out. But then, "You are drippings from the Devil's own penis - a veritable sperm bank for Satan's queers" is so hateful I can't maintain the pretence.

And the rest is just poison. Suggesting that teaching 'God loves everyone' is somehow associated with the devil. Urging to pray that more people will die so that they will go to hell. Thanking God for the deaths in Katrina and Tsunami ("Pray for more dead bodies floating on the fag-semen-rancid waters of New Orleans.") "THANK GOD FOR ALL DEAD SWEDES!!!". The blaming of September 11 and the deaths in Iraq on 'fags and dykes'. It's all horrible, and the worst is that people like this actually exists, and are alowed to reproduce and indoctrinate innocent children into this hatred.

And the scariest thing of all is my own succeptability to believe everything I read. I think there really are wizards living in secret all around Britain. Fairies populate the long grass in my garden. I try to communicate telepathically with my pets. I think it's cool to be uncool. And reading this sort of thing, I wonder, am I uncofortable because this is a violation of God's love? Or is it that I can't face the truth?

You see, Hell is a very useful tool of persuasion. It tickles upon people's fears of death, pushes them to the edge. Everyone wants to live forever in some way - nobody can face the idea of their conciousness, that they've worked hard on, nurturing and getting to understand and building memories with, just blinking out of existence. And you begin to feel that if you accept the idea of heaven, you're only accepting half of 'the truth'. And that's when people like this get you. Because Hell is not a fire-pit of an afterlife - it's a mind-altering drug. And like all dengerous drugs, it should be banned.

* Yeah, I'm not sure the bible can be blamed on God. It was written by a bunch of men in a patriarchal society - and the new testament was put together hundreds of years after the big J's death. But I don't deny that the bible makes a wonderful story, with some nice morals strung along in there.

Hell, I'm in love with Gromit. *head in hands*

So, what's new?

Mooooovies:
Well, I watched the Wallace and Gromit movie at last yesterday, and absolutely loved it, of course. It was like my childhood all over again. And I realised, as I was nearly crying in his best moments, that if Gromit was human he'd be just the sort of person I'd fall for. I'm not sure what that says about me.

I also just watched Larence Olivier's Hamlet for the first time and thought it was also pretty good. I did find myself spontaneously screaming 'Mufasa!' when the dead king says 'Remember me...' in that spectral voice. Which got me thinking about parallels to the Lion King and wondering why I hadn't noticed it before, but there you are. Which suggests that Scar got more than just food of Sarabi, but that doesn't bear thinking about, eugh. I was also shocked the length - or rather, the lack of length - of some of the men's skirts in that film too - the king's especially. There are young girls around, Claudius!

My Subconcious is aliiiive:
I have a badge that says 'Nobody deserves mime, Buffy.' I bought a Super Badge It! machine and I'm so in love with it! :D I need to buy a refill pack and make one that says 'But people have wives, Atherton!' which will be a source to mystery to everybody, including me. I don't understand my subconcious. Last night I dreamt about, among other things, powerpuff dolls coming to life and killing people. Davina McCall was there.

Geekitude and being a hoarder:
I now have three gameboys: An original, transparent one (my brother's old one), a bright pink pocket one (as purchased of ebay for a very decent price) and a purple game boy colour (found at the back of a cupboard in the garage). I think I'm just about ready to upgrade to an advance now. I also have many other things that I have discovered as we clean out the house - my old scooter safely folded in my room, an old guitar we found under the stairs, my iPod safe and sound, a printer, a bowler-type hat, and Eevee doll, various items of clothing, a whole box of tings I call interesting objects, which one the day the muse will force me to make into interesting and provocative sculptures, some new shoes, a new bag, a couple of useful tins and boxes and a smirnoff ice.

While the rest of the house gets slowly emptier, my room is slowly filling up to overflow...

MNI is broken broken broken! It has, however, blighted my mentality on all-girls boarding schools - I just read some book set in the nineteen forties and my mind went a bit haywire with theories...

My Summer of Love - depressing and sad but really good nonetheless.

Closer - my immediate reaction was that it was cold, sad and bizarre, because of the completely unlikable qualities of the four leads. I was left thinking, well so what?

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - so wonderful, both for the weirdness and the acting quality - both Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey were almost unrecognisable in their roles.

Me and You and Everyone we Know - really cute but really strange. The most interesting storylines were the ones given to the kids.

The Interpreter - I loved loved loved it, and I'm not even sure why... Something to do with Nicole Kidman probably.

Gia - pleasantly suprising in that it's more than just wish-fulfilment - Angelina was fantastic of course :D

Bound - wanted to see this for aaaages since we studied film noir in photography and it was mentioned on some leaflet. Hooray then that I was not disappointed and it was indeed very good, yay!

The Terminal - I found this arresting and adorable, if mainly because Vicktor's accent was so cute - 'I am afraid from wolfmens' :)

Nightwatch - Watched it just now - I kept falling asleep! But it was really cool nonetheless and the part where the kid collapses in 'the gloom' was seriously beautifreaky.

I am now going to watch something Korean called Sky Blue which I rented from blockbuster and looks really cool. Other movies I've got ready to watch are: Sin City, the Wallace and Grommit movie, Almost Famous, Coyote Ugly, SPUN, Around the World in Eighty Days (the new one), Once Upon a Time in Mexico and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. This is going to be exciting :D

This post ended up a lot longer than I had anticipated, oops...

ok, I posted about these I feel almost upsettingly well-informed, upsetting because now I know far too much about hatred. *sigh*

And watching telly. Lost was frabujous as is to be expected and I am muchly excited by the possibilities it has opened up, and can't wait to discover a lot of things that if anyone spoils for me I will hunt them down and kill them. I don't want to download it because that's hard and illegal (shhh! about the five films I've downloaded in the past two weeks) and plus there's a certain magic about watching something with that much anticipation and excititement. (although I could do without the squillion advert breaks, please.)

Of course, things differ with old, cancelled (grr) or I-missed-it TV - and I sometimes find myself ripping through tv-dvd boxsets in a matter of days. I just finished watching the OC Season One and loved it because it was so fantastic compared the pure drivel that's going on now. I mean, c'mon guys! You've got all that fabulous backstory and all the characters are doing is whittering on about their relationships all the time in all the episodes! Where's the drama? Where's the intrigue? And where, may I ask you, is the sex, violence and alcoholism this show promised us? I'm not sure what the OC is up to but I tell you, it's just boring boring boring. :(

Am I only one who thinks that Ryan's new love interest The Cousin of Deceaced Johnny looks like she was separated from Teresa, the Mother of His Baby and Childhood Sweetheart, at birth? The other issue is that it looks to be quite difficult to get into a chocalate monkey short of smashing with a hammer or sawing his head off. Photos are promised of the ensuing mayhem.

In other news, I'm seriously behind in my English (and in deadly trouble because I oops bunked Mrs Cox's lesson again for about the seventh time in a row and I have no good explaination I really don't. See, I went into Virgin Megastores armed with vouchers to begin my journey into the world of Firefly, but my eye was caught by something I'd heard of but never seen - Princess Mononoke. A dilemma ensued in which I was forced to decide between Serenity and Princess Mononke, and I eventuall decided to sacrifice thwe more important, vital items on my list (underwear and clothing) for the sake of buying both. Following this action, all my little cousins watched it voraciously on our ski trip. My sixteen-year-old brother discovered his inner Seth and watched it three days in a row. And I... vidded it.

Please leave feedback! As Layha Siderea once said, 'This shit takes time'. In four days I've managed to watch all of Firefly and Serenity and now there is no more... Woe. I even dreamt about it, which was good, except that I spent much of the dream in a blue-checked summer dress with a purple ribbon around my waist, which was bizarre. The Firefly bit was that it sort of replayed the Inara/Atherton parts from Shindig, and the only line I can remember is Inara saying 'But people have wives, Atherton!' Which makes no sense, but oh well.

Meh, I also found this funny:
'MARCH:Attractive personality. sexy. Affectionate. Shy and reserved. Secretive. Naturally honest, generous and sympathetic. Loves peace and serenity. Sensitive to others. Loves to serve others. Easily angered. Trustworthy. Appreciative and returns kindness. Observant and assesses others. Unfortunately, I have way more than six shows I can put down without feeling guilty about all the ones I'm excluding, so I wrote them all down and pulled them out of a hat (literally - I found a hat and everything) so here goes, in no particular order:

1 - Doctor Who (2005)
2 - Queer as Folk (the original mancunian one)
3 - Firefly (though I've still got five episodes to watch :D)
4 - Buffy the Vampire Slayer
5 - Shameless
6 - Hex

Meh, it's funny that four are British shows (and two set in Manchester) and the only American ones were both created by the same man, lol. (The other shows I wanted included Lost, Battlestar Galactica, The OC and Weeds, among others...)

1 - Who is your favorite character from #2? (Queer as Folk)
Vince. Stuart is gorgeous, of course, but Vince is just... adorable.

2 - Who is your least favorite character from #4? (Buffy)
Well there were a lot of people who were not fun to like, but in truth the worst had to be Riley, just because there was no power on earth that could make me care if he fell in a pit full of spikes (hee!) and died.

3 - What would a crossover between #1 and #5 include? (Doctor Who + Shameless)
The mind boggles. My theory is that the TARDIS would be somewhere in the Chatsworth estate, following up a rumour of a psychic dog, and Lip, high on something would attempt to steal it, enlisting the help of much of the family to wheel it away. Steve would attempt to flog it, unsuccessfully because the doors are jammed. Meanwhile, the Doctor would be teaching Debbie the wonders of the world, and she would be falling wildly in twelve-year-old love with him. In chasing up the TARDIS, Captain Jack would try to make a pass at Fiona, for which Steve fights him. They all eventually settle it with a blazing row and a good party (Rose and Lip should definitely get together at this point). The next morning, they discover the TARDIS gone. Frank wakes up in 1453 Russia with a hangover and chilly toes.

4 - Who is your favorite ship from #6? (Hex)
I HATED Malachi/Ella, it was so so wrong. Ella/Leon was absurdly cute though. Neither Cassie nor Troy were interesting enough to care whether they were on or off. Azazeal/Jo was a bit of alright. But my favourite has to be Thelma/Just about anybody, just because I am so totally in love with Thelma. Especially when she had her angel wings on. And Thelma/Roxanne would be darn interesting, but Thelma/Me would be best :D

5 - If you were to set one person from #3 and one person from #6 on a blind date, who would they be? (Firefly and Hex)
Heh. This requires leaps of imagination I've having trouble conjuring up at the moment... I think Azazeal and Inara would be able to discuss high matters of philosophy and the like and be terribly genteel which would suit them both down to the ground. His infinite charm (and intense evil) wouldn't quite manage to sweep her off her feet, though. And she wouldn't be having any of his anti-christ offspring, that's for certain.

6 - If you could meet one person from #4 and spend the day with them, who would it be, and what would you do? (Buffy)
It would be Willow, and she'd teach some nifty magic tricks to make things go glowy and breathlesslike. Shiny!

7 - If you could change one thing about #2's plotline, what would you change? (Queer as Folk)
Well I didn't much like the second series at all as much as the first. I reckon they should have never let Stuart and Vince get anywhere near together, mainly to save Vince the pain of having to get rejected time after time, poor baby. The overall effect was most unsatisfactory, but I have no idea what I'd do about it...

8 - Explain a relationship between two people (not necessarily romantic) from show #5, and why you like the relationship between them. (Shameless)
To tell the truth, I like the relationships in the whole Galagher family. It's such a mess of amorality, drink, drugs, violence, crime, secrets and sex you'd think there was no space for any love in it, but surprisingly every episode leaves you feeling heartwarmed because there is so much love it sort of sinks all the crap into itself. Half of what they do the do for each other.

9 - If the lead title characters (first name in the credits) from #1 and #3 were both drowning, and you could only save one, who would it be? (Doctor Who and Firefly)
Oh my God that would not be fair! That's the sort of descision that comes up in your nightmares, gah. I think in the end it would have to be Mal I saved, as the Doctor does have a few more lives to live. He could just regeneratapow outta there, while I rescue our poor gurgling spaceboy.

10 - If you could change the title characters' order in the credits for #4, what order would you choose? (Buffy)
I like them how they are, but I would lobby to have Faith included in the credits. No reason other than my love for her, lol.

11 - If you were able to add a new character, any kind of character you wanted, to the storyline for #6, what would the character be like and what would their role be? (Hex)
I would find someone with a very large gun to shoot Malachi through the head. Basically, an Ella that was actually useful.

12 - What happens in your favorite episode of show #2? (Queer as Folk)
Stuart has sex with a fifteen year old and becomes a father on the same night. Vince pulls a fat bloke with a fake chest. Nathan tells a lot of lies.

13 - If you could kill off one of the characters of #1, who would it be and how would you do it?
Adam would die, and it would be very messy.

14 - If you got the chance to visit the set for either show #3 or show #5, which would you choose? (Firefly and Shameless)
Considering I can find a place remarkably similar to the Chatsworth estate less than a five minute drive away, I think I'd definitely be visiting Serenity.

15 - If you could date anyone from any of these shows, which show and which person?
Thelma from Hex, certainly. Just... because, lol. Other possibilities would be Faith (Buffy), Steve (Shameless), Captain Jack (Dr Who), Spike (Buffy), River (Firefly) or Azazeal (Hex)

Found this on Cult of Lincoln, woo!

Firefly loove

There's no place I can be
Since I found Serenity...

And it's damn true! This is a quite old watercolour of him looking serious in a bed-like manner. The tattoo thing on his shoulder is from some crazy idea I think I may have stolen from somewhere (but that knowledge is lost to the dark recesses of my brain) about werewolves being 'branded' with come sort of identity code, remincent of the tattooing of holocaust victims. And the lines on his face are supposed to be scars - inspired by the POA movie and by a variety of fanfictions.

Pastel Potter - a rather poor first experiment with chalk pastels. This is exciting because I’ve always been a goodie-goodie.

- Watched Tipping the Velvet for the first time. It was very, very educational.

- Stood in front of a mirror looking for why someone could love me.

- Felt painful injustice during a lesson about gays and lesbians, and realised I’m going to see this thing through for real.

- Discovered Harry Potter NC-17 art and wasn’t as shocked as I’d thought I would be.

- Touched someone else’s nipple ring for the first time.

- Properly cut myself for real, on purpose, for the first time (and then was too freaked out to carry on, hah!)

- Been told two people’s big amazingly horrible secrets.

- Got worried I was falling for someone who was straight, discovered they might not be wholly straight, and immediately stopped having dodgy fantasies about them. LOL!

- Discovered I’m a bloody socialist and there’s nothing I can do about it.

- Had fantasies about throwing myself into and raining fists down upon the filing cabinet in the Rec, but while I’m at home in bed.

- Screamed at God for being such a twat, standing in the rain, pissed off my head, in a remote corner of a field.

- Felt included by people for the first time, and therefore felt doubly hurt when I was excluded by them.

- Really cried when someone died in a film for the first time. Really, actually, howling, sobbing, the lot. (It was Fried Green Tomatoes)

- Discovered Peter’s Cross Station and got angry. (I was angry before, this just gave me something to bend in the right direction. I wish I was an American right now…)

- Opened this blog, and ranted a lot.

- Grew up a hell of a lot, decided a few things, got very confused, loved a lot of things, hated a lot of things, was happy, was sad, shouted, screamed, laughed, cried, ran away, hugged, loved, wanted, been, cut, won, survived.

It’s been a bit of a slog, it really has. But I’m really, really going to miss it.

I don't WANT to be 18, and you can't make me!

I'm really not lookign forward to be eighteen next week. That is to say, I'm gonna be loving having my birthday, being able to buy drinks and etc, but I'm going to hate having to be eighteen.

Anyone else think the word 'eighteen' carries a sort of stigma? God, I really wish I could stay seventeen for an extra year and then be like, ooh, I'm nineteen. Nineteen sounds fabulous. Eighteen sounds horrible.

Ok, why? Well there's the fact that I really like being seventeen. Seventeen's been a really good year, full of milestones and growing up and happy and sad and so on, much better than sixteen, hugely more wonderufller even than fifteen, which I enjoyed at the time but, looking back, was a pile of shit. The thing with being seventeen is it means carefree, wild, young, exciting, sweet(er), still growing up, flexible, being basically illegal and it being fun stuff, learning to drive, exams, alcohol... well it means all that to me, when you say the word seventeen, that;s the image I get.

And at eighteen you're suddenly a lager lout. Face it, when you hear someone, some distant cousin's friend's sister's girlfriend, is eighteen, you'll have a lot different feeling than seventeen. The eighteen-year-old is rude, drunken, irresponsible, set in their ways, old, stuck somewhere between a teenager and adulthood and no fun at all.

Seventeen, you're young and fun. Nineteen, you're young and grown up, going to university, being clever. Eighteen, you're a shithead.

Ok, no offense to any eighteen-year-olds reading this. Don't forget, I'll be joining your ranks in a few precious days, and I'm sure I won't suddenly become horrible.

It's just this fear I have that I'm letting go of being a teenager too suddenly. I wasted the first four years of teenagerhood by being unpopular and shy. Then I turned seventeen, and everything was suddenly sunny. I bloody-well want those four years back, bastards! I want to have summers spent drinking illegal beers under a willow tree, and spend friday nights standing on cold, wet street corners, and bunk school, and smoke pot, and paint my room black, just like all my friends back then used to do. Oh, to be fourteen again!

Hah. No way am I going through all that shit again. But still, you see where I'm coming from? You know I can't even enjoy an illicit drink anymore, now that it's bloody legal. I can't do anything illegal any more and not feel guilty as hell (though I'll still be trying for a child fare on the train, right until the end of school, suckers)

Ok, I've whined a lot now. I have n exam tomorrow, so I'll return to the important task of preparation and save my ranting for my head.

Sketchbook

<img style="FLOAT: left; I actually nearly cried in the car earlier; Dad was playing some melancholy song about the flag of mayo or some such and I tuned in on a line about the sea lappin' on Ireland's shore and came over all patriotic.

I think it's because I've never set foot on Irish soil (well, I've stood on Dublin Airport concrete, but that was certainly not the same, as all airports are essentially alike, but that is not a story for now) and so Ireland has aquired a sort of mystical quality in my mind, associated with the wilder half of Me, the exciting and mysterious half that I don't quite have a rein on.

To tell the truth, it's nice to have a country you can be patriotic about without having to be embarassed. Being English and patriotic suggests an exclusion of others ('get outta my country'), a pride in the empire as it once was and, well, nobody else in the world thinks our history is anything to be proud of, and I'm inclined to agree. Yes, we were the first industrialised country, but we were also the first to have mass amounts of children dying from overwork, and so on.

Being patriotic about Ireland is different - it suggests an oppression which has bled through the centuries, of a little country fighting with all the others in the gutter, and of a sort of community for all us Irish-blood who don't live on the Emerald isle.

Maybe others feel differently, after all, this is the first time I've tried to capture that whole business in words, and I'm hardly connected to any Irish 'community' except through the stories of my great-to-the-power-of-ten Auntie Bridie. Apparently I'm related (through my father's grandfather) to one of the biggest Irish families of New York, one so big it can't have reunions any more without starting a riot.

So yeah, have a hapy St Patrick's day to all those who celebrate it, and, as my dad said to me and my brother as we left the car this morning: have a good day, and drink Guinness!

Some more of that schizm, while I'm at it.
